In the early days of the Terran rebellion, Tom Paris joined up with the cause despite the wishes of his father who held a fairly cushy supervisor position of one of the Alliance factories. He ended up in a cell with a younger man who had all but stumbled into the rebellion — [[Harry Kim (mirror)]]. The two formed a fast friendship, which only deepened with each mission they went on together. They saved each other's lives many times over, talked about everything under the stars in their downtime, and soon it was taken as a given that anywhere you saw one, you'd see the other.

Then in 2376, a sabotage mission in a dilithium mine went wrong. The guards had been tipped off that Tom and Harry were coming, and managed to pin them down in a dead end shaft in the mines. Even as Harry had been brainstorming ideas on how to engineer a distraction to allow them to slip past the guards, Tom charged at the guards with disruptor blazing, telling Harry to get out of there and get the intelligence they'd gathered about the mole who'd tipped off the guards back to the cell.
